Considering Carpet? Here Are Three Things to Keep in Mind

by Juanita Perkins

When it comes to the flooring in your home, carpeting may be the right choice in certain areas. While hard materials, such as hardwood and tile, remain popular in high-traffic rooms of the home, carpet is the flooring of choice for many in certain areas of the home. Carpet is soft, comfortable, and ideal for keeping the feet warm when temperatures drop. Carpet is, therefore, an ideal choice for bedrooms and family rooms. If you are considering carpeting for your home, here are three things that you should keep in mind.

Your Options

The first thing that you should be aware of is that when it comes to carpeting, there is a wide variety of options to choose from. When you look at your options, you will likely find a large selection of colors, materials, textures, and patterns. Carpet typically comes in either natural or synthetic materials. Wool is the most commonly used natural fiber for carpeting due to its warmth and durability. Synthetic fibers such as nylon, olefin, polyester, and acrylic are typically very durable and offer a lot of style options to choose from. You can even find carpeting that is made to be stain resistant.

Costs Can Vary

While many often think of carpeting as being the economical choice when it comes to flooring, the reality is that the cost of carpeting runs the gamut from affordable to very expensive. Just like with any other flooring option, there are inexpensive options and there are high-quality luxury options to choose from. On average, you can expect to pay between $765 and $2,521 for new carpeting installation. However, having old flooring removed and having unique home layouts can greatly increase the cost of carpet installation. Life expectancy of carpeting can vary, with inexpensive carpeting lasting between 1 and 5 years, mid-grade between 5 and 15 years, and luxury anywhere from 15 to 25 years.

Installation Time

With any home improvement project, it's important to keep your timeline in mind, especially if you have other ongoing projects. Carpet installation is no different. Carpet installation time can vary depending on the complexity of your home's layout, where the carpet is going, what floor is being replaced, and your installers. Typically it takes one day to prepare the floor for installation and one more day for the carpet installation itself.

If you are considering carpeting for your home, there are a few things that you should keep in mind. There are a variety of options to choose from, and there's a good chance that you will find carpeting that suits your home. The cost of carpeting can also vary greatly depending on your home and the type of carpeting you choose. Installation times can vary, but typically carpeting is a quick home improvement project.
