Cleaning And Maintenance Tips For Your Hardwood Floors To Keep Them Looking Like New

by Juanita Perkins

Hardwood floors are beautiful in any home. You can finish them with any stain you like for a look to match your personal style and the decor of your home - whether it's traditional, modern or even farmhouse, you can make your hardwood floors match your style. The downside to hardwood floors is that they can scratch and dull over time. Although the scratches and dents can add interest to your floors, they can also make them look a bit unsightly. Cleaning them properly and rejuvenating them will help to keep them looking like new. See below for some tips on how to accomplish this:

Use A Broom To Clean Floors

Wipe up crumbs and other debris from your hardwoods using a bristle broom rather than a vacuum cleaner. The beater bar on the vacuum can tear up your floors and cause fine (or deep) scratches to your hardwoods. A broom is a better way to clean your floors, or even a microfiber pad to clean them daily.

Deep Clean Them To Remove Dirt

Mud, dirt, footprints and other dirt can cling to your floors, and a broom or microfiber cloth just isn't going to get those floors as clean as they should be. Deep clean your floors using a cleaning solution made from a mixture of water and white vinegar, or you can use a commercial cleaning agent made for wood floors. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and use a soft cloth, such as a microfiber cloth. Wring out as much liquid as possible when cleaning your floors, so they aren't soaking wet.

Protect Your Floors

Help protect your hardwoods from scratches and from anything else that can damage your floors. Use soft pads beneath furniture to prevent scratches. Lay down area rugs or runners along walkways, especially if it is a traffic area of your home where someone may wear shoes, or where pets may frequent.

Rejuvenate With Sealer

Rejuvenate your wood floors with a sealer to bring back the shine to your floors and to help protect them from future damage. There are a number of sealers on the market that will help fill in scratches and bring back shine to dull floors. Read the manufacturer's instructions on how to use the product you choose. Allow the product to dry thoroughly and inspect your work. Reapply the product if needed.

Clean and protect your hardwood floors to make them look like new again and to extend the life of your floors. Contact a company like Blair & Sons Floor Co for more information and assistance.
